Climbing Ban Imposed at Castle on BLM Land

NewsNo Comments »

From the Access Fund:

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has issued a climbing ban on 400 acres in the Castle Rocks Interagency Recreation Area, adjacent to Castle Rocks State Park in Idaho. This ban affects over 40 established climbs and hundreds of potential new routes.

One thing to note too is that Shoshone tribal leaders are also very upset at the massive bolting at Massacre Rocks and are in the works to have an evaluation done of that area as well.

Dean Lord’s – Connor Creek Columns

News, Trip ReportNo Comments »

Dean Lords has penned a new post, with a handful of nice photos, on his blog about a recent visit to the basalt columns at Idaho’s Connor Creek Summit.

I first visited the columnar basalt zone on Connor Creek Summit in 1994. We only did two routes, but since that single visit to this small crag, i have always joked that the best crack climbing at the City of Rocks was at Connor Columns! Not that i think there isn’t good crack climbing at the City of Rocks…

Evolv Shoes, Mountain Gear, and Sender Films Presents “Origins”

NewsNo Comments »

Evolv Shoes along with Sender Films have teamed up to do some cool videos where the current generation of hot shots go out with the old school crushers and get on the defining routes of yesteryear.

Here is an excerpt from SenderFilms YouTube explanation:

April 05, 2010 — Welcome to our new series “Origins” — a fun video concept developed with the crew at Evolv Shoes, and also sponsored by Mountain Gear. “Origins” focuses on climbing’s rich history, following top athletes of today as they team up with their heroes from the past, and attempt to climb the iconic (and iconoclastic) routes of earlier generations.

The First “Origins” episode features two climbing stars: Kurt Smith, who put up some badass routes in Joshua Tree in 1988, and Chris Lindner, who was sending 5.12 routes when he was 5 years old. In this “Origins” episode, Chris sets out to climb Kurts slab test-piece on The Dunce Cap, UNREPEATED for 22 years — right in the heart of J-Tree climbing.

Directed by Rob Frost, and filmed by Frost with Russell Holcomb, this is a short film about Chris journey to do the second ascent of this forgotten Joshua Tree classic.
