Peter Joyce

InterviewsNo Comments »

Peter Joyce is one of six siblings of an east coast Irish Catholic family. Peter moved to Idaho in the late ’70′s with the intent of getting so far from home that he couldn’t go back on the weekends to do his laundry. Peter has been married over twenty years to his college sweetheart Heather. They have two boys, Logan and Colin.

Upon graduation from ISU Peter joined the Army, serving six years as a military photojournalist. Afflicted with Chief Pocatello’s curse Peter eventually returned to Pocatello in 1996 to take the job he currently holds with the Idaho State University’s Outdoor Program.

New Edition of Castle Rocks Guide Coming

NewsNo Comments »

Dave Bingham is sending final corrections to the printer for Castle Rocks Idaho – A Climber’s Guide. Copies will be available in Almo at Park Headquarters, The Outpost, Tracy’s, and Rock City. They should also be available at your local climbing shop. Dave expects the books this coming week.

Dave describes the new guide as follows:

“The new guide is 120 pages with over 100 photos. There are a total of 340 routes described, including 190 new routes. An extended access road makes Castle Rocks more user-friendly than ever, and a network of new trails leads to a much better concentration of moderate (sub-5.11) routes than nearby City of Rocks. Campers can stay at the hassle-free Smokey Mt. Campground, and take advantage of amenities of Almo (hot pool, restaurant, groceries) With it’s higher concentrations of climbs and easy access, Dave expects Castle Rock to become the destination of choice for many dedicated City of Rocks climbers.”

I look forward to checking this new guide out – and using it!

A Day at The Fins

Trip ReportNo Comments »

First of all I need to just state for the record that I am pretty much a punter these days. Despite always thinking about climbing and wishing I was climbing I never actually go climbing. Sure I hit an occasional bouldering session or participate in ISU’s Open Climbing. But ‘real’ climbing I seem to dodge out on.

Well the day finally came, Troy Neu told me that he was going to hook up with Matt TeNgaio for a day at The Fins and I should come. I immediately said yes. Troy, Stan Caldwell, and Josh Nielson picked me up. We headed out accross the desert on our way to The Fins. We made one last stop and hooked up with Matt TeNgiao and Dean and Heather Lords as they were our ‘guides’ for the day.
